RCSHS Concert Band

Concert Band 1/2 credit for each trimester (meets daily during 5th period)

This is the primary performing instrumental music organization in the RCSHS band program.  For high school concert band, most students should own their own instrument with the exception of a few large and expensive instruments. The ensemble will learn about music through the performance of challenging band literature of varying styles from different historical periods as well as recently composed works. This group will perform three to four regularly scheduled concerts, as well as participate for ratings at the KMEA District and State Concert Band Festival.  The band traditionally travels every other year to a major city for festival or concert performances. Members of the concert band will also perform for various school and community functions including local parades and basketball games. Members of this group may participate in State, District and University sponsored honor band and are encouraged to participate in the KMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Perucussion ensemble does rehearses during this time as the class is often divided into seperate rehearsal areas by winds and percussion.   Some after school section specific rehearsals and full band rehearsals may be required.

All playing members of the band program are required to be in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of Concert Band (Band B and C in the schedule) to be eligible for any other part of the band.  Exceptions to this are for jazz band members whose primary instrument are piano, guitar or bass and color guard members with no band experience.  Band A which meets during the first trimester is an instrumental techniques class with focus on chamber ensembles, individual musicianship and All District and All State Audition music.  Any student who is in high school concert band must participate in marching band (after school class) unless a school related conflict (ex. Fall sports) approved by the band director or a doctor approved medical problem would prevent them from doing so.
